On Destiny : Destined to “lose”, to be ridiculed, and to become Presidents
Sunday, November 30, 2008
My political models are Abraham Lincoln , Kim Dae Jung and Bishop Fernado Lugo of Paraguay. All of them are followers of the Lord Jesus Christ. All became Presidents of their respective countries.
Abraham Lincoln , Kim Dae Jung and Bishop Fernando Lugo were destined by God to become Presidents of their respective countries. But let’s have a glance of history, and know what they went through before they became Presidents.
Abraham Lincoln ran for Congress, and lost. He ran a second time and lost. He ran a third time and won. He ran for Senate and lost. He ran for Vice President and lost. He also lost in his business twice, and almost had a nervous breakdown. Then, he ran for President of the United States, and won. The American Civil War broke out in his first term. He ran for re-election and won.
Kim Dae Jung, on the other hand, ran five times for President of South Korea. He first ran for President of South Korea against President Park Chung Hee, and lost. After President Park died and was succeeded by Gen. Chun Doo Whan, he ran against him in another presidential election, and lost a second time. President Chun Doo Whan was succeeded by Korean General Roo Tae Woo. When another presidential election was held, Kim Dae Jung ran against President Roo Tae Woo, and lost a third time. Both Chun Doo Whan and Roo Tae Woo were jailed for corruption when President Kim Young Sam came to power. When presidential elections were held, Kim Dae Jung ran against President Kim , and lost for a fourth time. Undaunted, for the fifth time, after President Kim retired from politics, Kim Dae Jung ran for President of Korea. AND HE WON THIS TIME! He is the only Korean President to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Bishop Fernando Lugo was the real political greenhorn in Paraguay politics. He was ridiculed by his opponents when he ran for President of Paraguay just recently. He had no political experience, no money, no political machinery. But Paraguay needed change. In April 2008, just a few months back, Bishop Lugo was elected President of Paraguay – unprecedented in his nation’s history.
They are the “profiles in courage” who challenged their establishments and won! All of them had the “old blood and guts” of Gen. George Patton.
Small-minded persons ridiculed them. But they refused to be intimidated by the scorn of their midget-minded critics. They fought and fought! They dared and won!
They are my political models. They were destined to become Presidents of their respective countries.
I’m young – just 53 years old. I will be in Philippine politics until the age of 73, or even 79. And I can improve in this age of modern technology and communications – of e-mail, and websites, and blogsites, and wireless and satellite communications. Power is no longer the exclusive domain of the wealthy but also of the knowledgeable.
And I believe that in and with God, nothing is impossible! God makes what is humanly impossible, possible! For nothing is impossible with God! I also believe in destiny. It is God who writes our destiny. It is God, not small-minded critics, who have authored my destiny!
